DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION
A striking Dogon ritual vessel with lid, cast in copper alloy and notable for its imposing verticality, dense decorative program and technical refinement. Combining container, pedestal and sculptural finial, this is a visually powerful piece that belongs to the broader tradition of Dogon ritual receptacles and figural metalwork.

ETHNOGRAPHIC CONTEXT
Among the Dogon of Mali, ritual receptacles could be associated with offerings, ceremonial use and the symbolic world of ancestors, fertility and protection. Comparable museum pieces show the importance of such vessels within ritual life, while Dogon copper-alloy works more broadly are linked to altar practice and ancestral presence. Exact dating of Dogon copper-alloy pieces is often difficult and remains largely stylistic, which makes a cautious dating to the second half of the 20th century appropriate here.

FORM AND ICONOGRAPHY
This example is built around a cylindrical body covered with relief ornament and framed by geometric friezes. The sides are animated by human figures in relief, while the vessel rises on an openwork figural support set above a circular base. The lid is surmounted by a seated figure holding an attribute, giving the whole a strongly narrative and ceremonial character.

TECHNIQUE AND SURFACE
The piece was made using the lost-wax casting technique, a process long practiced in West Africa and particularly suited to the production of unique, highly detailed metal objects. The dark surface, with lighter wear on the protruding areas, emphasizes the complexity of the relief and the vitality of the modeled forms.

CONDITION
Good overall condition, with visible age-related wear.
Surface rubbing, minor abrasions and casting irregularities consistent with age and handling.
No major structural issue visible from the photographs.
