Carved wooden bust of a bishop, 16th century, central Europe The sculpture depicts a bishop wearing a mitre and liturgical vestments, rendered in a frontal and compact format. The face is sober and introspective, with simplified yet expressive features characteristic of late Gothic carving traditions. The mantle is gathered at the chest by a stylised quatrefoil-shaped clasp. The present bust may possibly have been reduced from a larger figure, as suggested by the flat lower edge and truncated form. Carved in wood with original polychromy. Condition: overall in good condition for its age. Some losses to the polychromy, top of the mitre is damaged, traces of woodworm (not active) Dimensions: 32.5 (h) x 22 (w) x 12 (d) cm.
