The 14th century was a transformative era for European pottery, marked by a shift from purely functional, coarse-ware vessels toward more refined and decorative ceramics. During this period, the production of highly glazed jugs and pitchers became a hallmark of the craft, particularly in regions like England and France. These vessels often featured lead glazes in vibrant shades of copper green or honey yellow. Innovations in kiln technology allowed potters to achieve higher temperatures, leading to the rise of stoneware in the Rhineland, which offered a durable, non-porous alternative to traditional earthenware.
In terms of aesthetics, potters began to draw inspiration from contemporary metalwork and gothic architecture. Vessels were frequently adorned with applied clay decorations, such as scales, scrolls, or stylized floral motifs.
