This elegant small Japanese drawer chest (ko-dansu) is a beautifully crafted storage cabinet made of richly grained wood and fitted with traditional iron hardware. The piece features five drawers arranged in a practical layout, allowing for the careful storage and organization of small valuables.
The warm reddish wood grain, combined with the bold black metal corner fittings and drawer pulls, reflects the distinctive aesthetic of traditional Japanese furniture. The iron fittings are inspired by samurai-era hardware, reminiscent of the decorative metalwork found on sword fittings such as tsuba and other warrior accessories.
Because of its compact size and multiple drawers, this chest is ideal for storing small collectibles such as sword fittings (tsuba), netsuke, jewelry, seals, coins, or other precious objects. It also works beautifully as a decorative accent in a study, living room, or collector’s display space.
The interior drawers are finished with light-colored wood, providing a clean and practical storage environment that contrasts elegantly with the deep exterior tone.
A label on the back indicates that this piece was produced by Takayama Keyaki Crafts, known for creating furniture inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
This piece is both functional and decorative — a wonderful example of Japanese small furniture suitable for collectors of samurai-related items, traditional crafts, or Japanese interior design.
The item shows minor signs of age and use, which add to its authentic character.
Estimated production period: late Showa period (昭和 late period – approx. 1970s–1980s).
Note:
The styled interior photograph is for display purposes only and is intended to illustrate how the Chest may be presented.
This auction lot includes the Chest only.
All other objects shown in the photographs — including decorative props and the Coca-Cola can used for size reference — are not included in the sale.
