Chawan - Jernglasur (Tetsu-yū) - Keramik - Krysantemummotiv
This elegant Japanese Matcha Tea Bowl (Chawan) is a refined ceramic work decorated with an intricate chrysanthemum motif carved in relief, finished with a soft and expressive iron glaze (Tetsu-yū). The bowl presents a harmonious balance between traditional craftsmanship and refined aesthetic sensibility, embodying the quiet beauty associated with Japanese tea culture.
The entire surface of the bowl is meticulously adorned with repeated chrysanthemum patterns. In Japan, the chrysanthemum symbolizes longevity, nobility, and elegance, making it a highly meaningful motif in traditional decorative arts. The delicate floral carving creates a subtle play of light and shadow across the surface, enhancing the tactile and visual depth of the ceramic.
The iron glaze produces a calm gray tone with soft variations, allowing the carved chrysanthemum pattern to emerge gracefully from the surface. The interior of the bowl continues the same decorative theme, creating a beautifully unified design when viewed from above during the tea ceremony. The foot of the bowl displays the natural texture of the clay body, providing a pleasing contrast to the refined glaze.
The bowl comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako), inscribed with calligraphy indicating “Iron Glaze Tea Bowl.” The presence of the original box enhances both authenticity and collectability, making this piece particularly attractive to collectors and practitioners of the Japanese tea ceremony.
With its refined carving, symbolic floral design, and elegant iron glaze, this tea bowl represents a sophisticated example of modern Japanese ceramic artistry suitable for tea ceremony use or for display as part of a ceramic art collection.

The styled interior photograph is for display purposes only and is intended to illustrate how the Tea Bowl may be presented. This auction lot includes the Tea Bowl only.
Artist Profile
The tea bowl bears the artist signature “Keisuke” (佳祐) on the wooden box and seal, indicating the work of a Japanese ceramic artist specializing in traditional tea ceremony utensils. Artists working in this tradition inherit techniques developed through centuries of Japanese ceramic history, particularly influenced by the aesthetic ideals of the Momoyama period (Azuchi-Momoyama era, 1573–1603) when expressive tea wares flourished.
Contemporary tea bowl artists such as Keisuke continue this lineage by combining classical glazing methods with refined decorative techniques such as carved floral motifs. Each bowl is individually handmade and kiln-fired, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.
