Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.

A solid cast silver statue of the Roman God Serapis, standing draped in a mantle over his tunic, his head surmounted by a modius, his hair bound in a fillet, an ample cornucopia in his left hand.
The statue can stand stable on its base. Roman silver statues are very rare.

-> Serapis or Sarapis was a Greco-Roman god, derived from the Egyptian Osiris and Apis. The cult of Serapis was popularized in the 3rd century BC as a means to unify the Greek and Egyptian subjects of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. Serapis was worshipped throughout the Roman world in the guise of Zeus, ruler of the heavens, or that of Hades, god of the Underworld. This small figure wears the Egyptian modius (grain measure) headdress and carries a cornucopia (horn of plenty) to symbolize a plentiful food supply.

Height: ± 54,3 mm

Condition: Good and solid condition, base and and right arm are incomplete, some encrustations of sand/minerals. Visible signs of wear consistent with an ancient artefact.

Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).

Material:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.

Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.

Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
