Italian School (XVIII), Cirkel af - Ecce Homo

Late 18th century oil on canvas laid down on panel depicting “Ecce Homo”, showing Christ crowned with thorns and draped in a red cloak, presented by figures in the background. The composition focuses strongly on the expressive and serene face of Christ, rendered with notable softness and refinement, contrasting with the more robust figures surrounding him. The painting shows clear influence of the Italian Baroque tradition and can be placed in the circle or manner of Guido Reni, known for his delicate and idealised representations of Christ. The use of light, the gentle modelling of the flesh tones and the emotional restraint are characteristic elements associated with this school. The work is executed in oil on canvas, later laid down on panel, a practice commonly encountered for preservation. The surface shows age-related craquelure and areas of paint loss, consistent with its age. Presented in an antique frame, likely 18th century, which complements the work well and enhances its overall appearance. Condition: laid down on panel. Visible wear, craquelure and paint losses. No recent restoration observed under normal inspection. Dimensions: approx. 31 x 36.5 cm including frame. A strong and decorative 18th century devotional painting with clear Baroque influence and an appealing, expressive depiction of Christ. Shipping & Disclaimer The object will be carefully packed and shipped with professional materials. We ship internationally, including to the United States. Shipping to the US is entirely at the buyer’s risk. The seller cannot be held responsible for loss, damage, customs delays or import duties.
