The Medal for Military Merit (Militär-Verdienstmedaille), commonly known as the Signum Laudis, was introduced by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1890. It was awarded for meritorious service in both war and peace. From 1911, the award became multi-grade and the Silver Military Merit Medal was introduced. From April 1917, the Military Merit Medal was awarded by the new ruler, Emperor Charles. It was decorated with an effigy of the Emperor and the Holy Crown of Hungary was also placed next to the imperial crown.
