Beskrivelse fra sælger
Ancient Near Eastern Anthropomorphic Stone Macehead - Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, c. 3000–1500 BC
Note : Sorry no shipping outside of the European Union.
Culture : Near Eastern (Anatolian–Levantine sphere)
Material: Likely Steatite (soapstone)
Dimensions
Height: 23.6 mm
Width: 23 mm
Weight: 23.84 g
Description:
A finely carved anthropomorphic stone amulet depicting a stylized human face, executed in a compact, volumetric form characteristic of early Near Eastern symbolic objects.
The frontal plane features:
Clearly defined circular eyes, deeply incised
A pronounced, sculptural nose ridge
A subtly carved mouth forming an enigmatic expression
The object’s body is rounded yet faceted, creating a distinct star-like or lobed profile when viewed from above. This sculptural treatment enhances its tactile and visual presence.
A central vertical perforation, drilled from top to base, confirms its function as a suspended amulet or bead, likely worn on a cord or integrated into a necklace.
Artistic & Cultural Significance:
This piece embodies the abstract yet expressive human representation typical of early Anatolian and Levantine traditions. The reduction of facial features into simple geometric forms reflects a symbolic rather than naturalistic intent—commonly associated with protective, ritual, or identity-related objects.
Anthropomorphic beads of this type are understood to have served as:
Protective amulets
Markers of identity or status
Ritual or spiritual objects
Condition:
Complete and intact
Surface wear consistent with age and handling
Natural patina and mineral accretions present
No visible restorations or modern alterations
Provenance:
From a European private collection, formed in the late 20th century.
A provenance statement and declaration of legal origin can be provided in PDF format upon request.
Collector’s Note:
An authentic Near Eastern anthropomorphic steatite amulet, dating to the Late Neolithic–Early Bronze Age, distinguished by its expressive facial carving and sculptural star-like form. A compelling example of early human representation in miniature, combining symbolic abstraction with functional design.
