Cursive Script (雲高夢靜,Unkō Mujō) - Shimizu Hiroshi (清水比呂志,art name Seisui 青水,1931–2004) - Japan (Ingen mindstepris)

Title: Cursive Script (雲高夢靜,Unkō Mujō) Artist: Shimizu Hiroshi (清水比呂志,art name Seisui 青水,1931–2004) Medium: Handwritten ink calligraphy Signature & Seals: Artist’s signature and seals Sheet Size: 31.5 × 129.5 cm (12.4 × 51.0 in) Material: Japanese washi paper Date: Late Shōwa – Early Heisei period (c. 1960s–1980s) This is an original handwritten work by the celebrated Japanese modern calligraphy master Shimizu Hiroshi (清水比呂志,art name Seisui 青水). A towering figure in the Japanese calligraphy world from the Shōwa to Heisei eras, he served as Director of the Nitten Exhibition and Chairman of the Japan Calligraphy Academy, and is widely recognized as one of the leading exponents of modern Japanese calligraphy (shodō). Renowned for his bold, expressive cursive script, his works masterfully blend centuries of traditional calligraphic technique with contemporary abstract aesthetics. He exhibited extensively at major institutions in Japan and internationally, and was a pivotal figure in elevating Japanese calligraphy to a global stage. This piece is a quintessential horizontal cursive work of modern Japanese shodō, centered on the iconic four-character Zen and tea ceremony auspicious phrase “Unkō Mujō (雲高夢靜)”: Literal meaning: High clouds, peaceful dreams. The phrase symbolizes a mind as clear, vast, and untroubled as clouds in the high sky—free from worldly distractions, achieving a state of profound inner peace and tranquility. This is the highest spiritual ideal pursued by Japanese literati and tea masters, making the work a timeless choice for adorning tea rooms and studies to cultivate an ethereal, serene atmosphere. Executed in powerful, vigorous cursive script, the work showcases dynamic brushwork and dramatic ink contrast, fully embodying the strength, freedom, and expressive spirit of modern Japanese calligraphy. Left vertical signature: Seisui Sho (青水書) Seals: Top right leisure seal (red relief): Jūshin (從心) Upper square seal (red relief) beside signature: Isumi Kiyoshi In (衣水清印) Lower square seal (white intaglio) beside signature: Seisui (青水) The work shows traces of previous mounting. There is a single scratch on the paper surface, which does not affect the calligraphy itself (see red marking). Due to age, the washi paper exhibits natural toning, foxing, and creasing. The work is fully intact overall and in good condition. Due to service suspension, Taiwan Post EMS has suspended parcel delivery to the following countries starting March 10, 2026: United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Israel, Pakistan, Maldives, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece, Egypt, Morocco.
