Renge-ji (蓮華寺) - Masao Ido (井堂雅夫,1945–2016) - Japan (Ingen mindstepris)

Title: Renge-ji (蓮華寺) Artist: Masao Ido (井堂雅夫,1945–2016) Signature & Seal: Signed and sealed by the artist Paper Size: 19.5 × 25.5 cm (7.7 × 10.0 in) Image Size: 15 × 21 cm (5.9 × 8.3 in) Frame Size: 27 × 33.2 × 3 cm (10.6 × 13.1 × 1.2 in) Paper: Washi This serene print was created by Masao Ido (井堂雅夫), one of the leading modern landscape woodblock artists of Japan’s Shōwa–Heisei period, circa 1980–1990s. A master of Japanese modern creative printmaking (Sōsaku-hanga), Ido is renowned for his depictions of Kyoto temple gardens. He studied under Shigechika Ōtsubo and remained committed to the traditional woodblock process: self-drawn, self-carved, self-printed. His minimalist, tranquil style is defined by a signature emerald-green palette that captures the meditative spirit of Zen gardens. His works are held in major collections including the Tokyo National Museum and the Library of Congress. The foreground features clear blue-green pond water, rendered with flat and graded color blocks to suggest gentle light reflections. Moss-covered rocks and clear reflections create a quiet, meditative atmosphere. The middle ground shows dark, varied stones rising from the water, some dusted with snow or frost, linked by a small Japanese stone bridge — a classic Zen garden composition. The background uses layered shades of deep and light green to depict lush foliage, establishing strong depth and a sense of peaceful space. With flat color blocks and minimalist composition, the work rejects the elaborate detail of traditional ukiyo-e, instead using modern design language to express the quiet beauty of the Japanese garden — a classic example of modern Japanese landscape printmaking. As an icon of Japanese Zen culture, Renge-ji (蓮華寺) allows the work to convey the wabi-sabi aesthetic of traditional gardens, making it a highly representative expression of modern Japanese art. Titled Renge-ji (蓮華寺) in pencil lower left; signed by the artist with red seal lower right. The work is presented in a wooden frame without glass. The frame shows minor rubbing, scuffs, and small losses consistent with age and normal use. The print displays slight natural age-related toning; overall condition is good.
