Dial and Hands
The dial of this Lord Matic is an absolute standout, featuring a rich, vibrant blue surface that catches the light beautifully and remains in remarkably clean condition. The dial is free from any visible moisture marks, heavy spotting, or discoloration, presenting a highly attractive and unified aesthetic. It is meticulously detailed with applied silver-tone baton indices featuring bright white central inserts that enhance legibility. The applied "SEIKO" and "LM" logos are crisp and prominent, while the printed white minute track and lower dial text remain perfectly intact. At the three o'clock position, a polished metal-framed window displays the day and date, featuring a dual-language English and Kanji day wheel. The silver-tone baton hands are similarly well-preserved, featuring matching white central stripes and a slender sweeping seconds hand that traverses the dial with vintage elegance.
Case and Crystal
The 37 millimeter stainless steel case features a distinctive monocoque, front-loading design, proudly denoted on the caseback by the engraved instructions "OPEN THRU GLASS". This single-piece case construction was engineered to provide superior protection against dust and moisture. The case exhibits a handsome profile with gently curving lugs, showcasing a transition between the brushed upper surfaces and the polished case flanks. The polished bezel frames the dial handsomely. The case remains in good vintage condition, displaying honest signs of wear, including light surface scratches and handling marks consistent with a watch of its era, yet it retains its strong factory lines without evidence of over-polishing. A clear crystal protects the dial, offering an unobstructed view of the vibrant blue display beneath. The solid caseback is sharply engraved with all factory markings, including the Suwa factory logo and the serial number.
Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 5606, a highly regarded 23-jewel automatic movement produced by the Suwa Seikosha factory. This caliber was a cornerstone of Seiko's premium offerings in the 1970s, known for its refined architecture and reliable performance. The movement features both day and date complications with a quickset function. The mechanical components are securely housed within the monocoque case, preserving the authentic engineering of the era.
Strap
The watch is fitted with its original stainless steel multi-link bracelet, a rare and highly desirable component that completes the factory aesthetic. The bracelet features an intricate brick-link pattern that drapes comfortably on the wrist and is secured by a folding clasp prominently stamped with the "SEIKO LM" branding. The bracelet exhibits normal vintage stretch and light surface wear consistent with the case, accommodating a wrist size of up to 17.5 centimeters.
Condition
This Seiko is presented in excellent vintage condition. The case and original bracelet show normal, honest wear with light superficial scratches that speak to its history while maintaining a strong overall presence. The true highlight is the dial, which remains exceptionally clean and vibrant, free from the degradation often found in colored dials of this period. The hands and applied furniture are equally well-preserved, making this a visually stunning example on the wrist.
Dimensions
The stainless steel case measures 37 millimeters in diameter, excluding the crown. The included original integrated-style bracelet will accommodate a wrist circumference of up to 17.5 centimeters.
Remarks
Finding a Seiko Lord Matic with such a pristine colored dial and its original signed bracelet is becoming increasingly difficult. The combination of the vivid blue display, the intricate multi-link bracelet, and the technically interesting front-loading case makes this a standout vintage piece. It offers immense charm and daily-wear versatility, serving as a testament to Seiko's mastery of design and manufacturing during the 1970s.
History
Introduced in 1968, the Lord Matic line was created to serve as the sophisticated mid-to-upper tier of Seiko's catalog, heavily utilizing the newly developed 5600 series of movements. Positioned just below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko collections, the LM series offered collectors high-end features, such as hacking seconds, quickset day-date functions, and advanced case manufacturing techniques. The Lord Matic models were instrumental in defining Seiko's "Grammar of Design" era, bringing sharp, modern aesthetics and reliable automatic winding to the discerning professional. Today, the Lord Matic is celebrated by collectors as one of the most culturally significant and well-executed vintage Seiko families ever produced.
