Beskrivelse fra sælger
Bronze statuette of Aphrodite
Aphrodite is an ancient Greek goddess associated with love, lust, beauty, pleasure, passion, procreation, and as her syncretized Roman goddess counterpart Venus, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity, and victory. The cult of Aphrodite was largely derived from that of the Phoenician goddess Astarte, a cognate of the East Semitic goddess Ishtar, whose cult was based on the Sumerian cult of Inanna. Aphrodite's main cult centers were Cythera, Cyprus, Corinth, and Athens. Her main festival was the Aphrodisia, which was celebrated annually in midsummer.
During the Hellenistic period, the Greeks identified Aphrodite with the ancient Egyptian goddesses Hathor and Isis, and many images of the goddess show this oriental influence, just like this statuette.
Aphrodite stands nude, with her weight on her left leg, her head turned to the right and both arms raised. She is crowned by a large diadem with radiated, openwork palmetts on the top. Her centrally parted hair pulled into a knot at the back of her head, with two long corkscrew curls falling on each shoulder. The figure is standing on a profiled pedestal
