BarBeni (1981) - “Crimson Hope on the Longest Night”
“Crimson Hope on the Longest Night”
Description:
This painting is inspired by Yalda Night, one of the oldest traditions in Persian culture, celebrated on the winter solstice—the longest night of the year. On this night, families and friends gather together, share stories, read poetry (often from Hafez), and enjoy fruits such as watermelon and pomegranate while welcoming the return of longer, brighter days.
In Yalda tradition, watermelon symbolizes warmth, life, and the continuation of summer within the heart of winter. It is believed that eating it on this night brings health and energy for the colder months ahead. In this artwork, the vivid red of the watermelon against a dark background reflects this very idea: light, hope, and vitality emerging from darkness.
Interestingly, watermelon also carries positive meanings in other cultures. In many Mediterranean and Asian countries, it is associated with freshness, abundance, and hospitality. In Western art—particularly in still life painting—it often represents the simple pleasures of life, the spirit of summer, and the passage of time.
