ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bernard Schultze (1915–2005) was a German painter and a key figure in postwar abstract art. Born in Schneidemühl, Germany, he became associated with the Art Informel movement, which emphasized spontaneity, gesture, and emotional expression. After World War II, Schultze played an important role in rebuilding the German avant-garde and co-founded the group “Quadriga” in 1952, promoting abstract painting in Europe.
His work is known for its dynamic compositions and textured surfaces, often incorporating unconventional materials. Schultze also created imaginative sculptural forms called “Migofs,” combining painting and sculpture in hybrid, organic creations.
Among his main achievements are his contribution to the development of Art Informel, his influence on European abstraction, and his participation in major international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, establishing his reputation as a leading modern artist.
