Accompanied by a poem by Maria Barnas, this project by photographer Viviane Sassen explores themes of the self and the other, as well as love and loss, in relation to the human condition. In a remote village in the Surinamese jungle, Sassen photographed a young man named Etan and combined these portraits with blurred and fragmented self-portraits. In doing so, she reflects on the ancient myths of Narcissus and on Pliny the Elder’s account of the origin of painting. The result is a poetic and introspective work that moves between portraiture, myth, and personal reflection. The book cover shows one small trace of wear. 72 Pages - 20.5 × 28.2 cm
