Reference: BMC 19; SNG Cop 71 var. Historical Context: Antioch on the Orontes was one of the largest and most influential cities of the Hellenistic world, serving as the capital of the Seleukid Empire. This bronze dichalkon was struck during a period of significant political instability as the Seleukid dynasty neared its end. The obverse features Tyche, the tutelary deity of the city, wearing a mural crown (turreted) which symbolizes the city's protective walls. The reverse legend identifies Antioch as the "Metropolis," reflecting its status as a premier administrative and cultural center. The tripod, a symbol associated with Apollo—the ancestral god of the Seleukid kings—signifies the religious continuity and authority of the mint. Despite its "light weight" for the issue, this coin represents the civic pride of a city that remained a pivotal crossroads between the Mediterranean and the East well into the Roman era.
