Their petals unfurl in soft, luminous spirals, while several stems bend outward, suggesting a gentle surrender to gravity. The flowers seem to breathe, as though exhaling the “Mediterranean sighs” evoked in the title. To the left, a vivid branch of red coral rests upon a small base. This detail subtly shifts the painting’s atmosphere. Coral, born from the depths, introduces the presence of the abyss. Its branching form mirrors the organic rhythm of the peony stems, creating a dialogue between sea and land, depth and surface, permanence and fragility. The composition is grounded by a rich red drapery cascading over a wooden ledge. The fabric’s folds are rendered with careful attention to light, adding a quiet theatricality. As in much of Sciacca’s work, the stage-like setting elevates simple objects into carriers of symbolic meaning.
