A set of three antique gunpowder horns, dating to the 19th century. All three are made from animal horn and were used by hunters to carry black powder in the field. Horn was the material of choice for this purpose as it is naturally waterproof and non-sparking, keeping the powder dry and safe to use. The two larger horns served as the main powder carriers. The smallest of the three is a priming horn, used to hold the finer priming powder needed to ignite the firing pan of a flintlock rifle. Two horns are fitted with a wooden stopper and a carrying strap; two have leather straps, and the largest has a twisted cord. The bases are secured with brass pins. All three are in lovely condition, the largest one has a crack near the stopper. Fantastic looking set.
