Headrests were made for sleeping while protecting the sleeper’s elaborate hairstyle as well as height allows wind currents to pass through and cool the wearer from the region’s hot climates. Among some nomadic sub-Saharan ethnic groups, not only was owning large cattle a symbol of wealth, but the wooden headrest was and often are indices of additional status and support.
