Bronzealder Bronze Spydspids med rottehalet tang (Ingen mindstepris)
A finely cast Bronze Age bronze spearhead, featuring a large, wide leaf-shaped blade with round, sloping shoulders and a prominent central midrib. From a wide cylindrical stem, which flares out towards the bottom, a square-sectioned, 'rat-tail' tang descends, curving at the base. The tang comes to a square terminal. This would have been inserted into a wooden shaft. A green patina and earthly encrustations to the surface. Signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as chips to the edges of the blade and surface scratches.
In ancient times a number of nomadic populations, such as the Medes and the Kassites settled in the Western Asiatic region. Due to the nomadic nature of the tribes, none of these bronzes were of great size, since it was required for them to be light and portable. Their artwork mainly comprises ornaments, vessels and weapons. Most of these bronze items have been recovered in funerary contexts.
Measurements: (circa) L 25cm x W 3.6cm
Provenance: Ex. London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
