Antique Japanese Menuki - Pair of Lions (Shishi)
Shakudo with Gold Gilding - Edo Period - With Original Box
A fine pair of Japanese menuki depicting
Sōshishi (双獅子 - paired lions), masterfully
crafted in shakudo with gold gilding (iroe).
The lions are rendered with exceptional detail
and precision, showcasing the high level of
craftsmanship characteristic of Edo period
tosogu makers.
SYMBOLISM
The paired lion (Sōshishi) motif carries
auspicious meaning in Japanese culture,
representing:
- Protection and warding off evil
- Authority and strength
- Prosperity and fertility
CONDITION
Both menuki are in good antique condition
with patina consistent with age.
Please note: the reverse peg (ashi) is
detached, however the original securing
plate (yotsune) remains intact.

Comes with original wooden box
(some wear and aging to box consistent
