HAPPY BIRTHDAY|Iida Yoshikuni 飯田善國(いいだよしくに) Description: This silkscreen work titled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" was created in 1976 to celebrate the founding of the Gendai Hanga Center (Modern Print Center). The letters "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" are arranged on the left side, and "TANJYOBI OMEDETO" (meaning "Happy Birthday" in Japanese) on the right side. It employs a unique method called "Shokuzobunka" (Color-Image Culture), where each of the 26 letters of the alphabet is assigned a specific color, replacing letters with colors. Artist Profile: Born in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture in 1923. Graduated from Keio University (Aesthetics and Art History) in 1949 and Tokyo University of the Arts (Umehara Ryuzaburo Class, Oil Painting) in 1953. Moved to Rome, Italy in 1956 and studied sculpture under Fazzini. Based in Vienna and Berlin from 1957 to 1967, producing prints and stone sculptures. Received the City of Vienna Art Encouragement Prize in 1961. Won first prize in a monument sculpture competition organized by the City of Berlin in 1965.
