En træmaske - Baule - Elfenbenskysten (Ingen mindstepris)

This mask belongs to the cultural context of the Baule people of central Ivory Coast, whose mask and figurative art exhibits a complex interplay of aesthetic ideality, social representation, and spiritual efficacy. Baule masks frequently appear in performative contexts and embody spirit beings (asie usu) or idealized human figures that reflect moral and social values. Incl stand. The mask's face is characterized by a balanced yet expressive design. Prominent, finely crafted eyebrows with detailed hair texture converge at a central point above the bridge of the nose, defining the high forehead. The eyes appear almost closed, conveying an introverted, controlled presence. Below a long, narrow nose, the mouth opens to reveal meticulously carved teeth, creating a subtle tension between stillness and expressiveness. An ornamental band separates the forehead from the hair ring, while a wide, surrounding frame encloses the mask and allows it to be attached to the wearer. The crowning element of a kneeling male figure expands the iconographic dimension: With bent arms and hands resting on his knees, closed eyes, and a finely crafted hairstyle, he embodies an attitude of composure and inner concentration. Decorative elements at his neck, hips, and wrists underscore his status. The partially glossy patina and visible signs of wear suggest ritual use. In its combination of mask and crowning figure, the object articulates a multifaceted visual language in which physical appearance and spiritual meaning are inextricably intertwined. Literature (selection) Vogel, Susan Mullin: Baule: African Art, Western Eyes. New Haven, 1997. Cole, Herbert M.: Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa. Washington, 1989. Fischer, Eberhard: African Art. Munich, 2006. CAB47425
