Bibliography: CHRISTOPHE Jacques, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen : L'Oeuvre de Guerre (Oeuvre graphique De 1914 À 1920), Tome 2 / N°110 page 138.
During the First World War (1914-1918), Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen set aside the exuberance of the Belle Époque to become a visual chronicler of human suffering. His focus was not on military glory or grand battles, but on the impact of war on ordinary people. His engravings and lithographs denounced the devastation of what he considered a senseless war. After the conflict, he collaborated with left-wing newspapers such as L'Humanité to continue promoting his social ideals. And although Steinlen is remembered today mainly for his cats, his wartime work (comprising more than 200 prints and lithographs) is considered one of the most important artistic testimonies to the misery of war.
