Gandhara Skifer Bodhisattva-hoved - 3. til 5. århundrede e.Kr.
A Rare Gandhara Schist Head of Bodhisattva, 3rd-5th Century AD
H6.2×W5×D2 cm (H14.6 cm with Stand)
A rare Gandharan schist head, finely carved in high relief, possibly representing a Bodhisattva or princely figure. The face is rendered with a serene expression, almond-shaped eyes beneath arched brows, a straight nose, and softly modelled lips. The figure wears a distinctive headdress or turban-like crown, its upper contours now partially worn through age and burial.
The surface retains a heavily weathered, archaeological texture, with areas of earthen encrustation and mineral patination. Despite its fragmentary condition, the head preserves a strong sculptural presence and reflects the refined modelling associated with Gandharan Buddhist art, where Hellenistic naturalism was absorbed into the visual language of early Buddhist imagery.
Mounted on a custom transparent acrylic display stand.
Reference:
For a larger and more complete Gandharan schist head of a Bodhisattva with related facial modelling and elaborate headdress, see the example in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession no. 13.96.8.
Provenance:
Acquired from a private collection in 1982, Paris
Condition:
Overall in fragmentary but stable condition. Surface wear, weathering, encrustation, mineral deposits, abrasions and losses throughout, consistent with age. Mounted on a modern transparent acrylic display stand. No obvious modern restoration visible from the photographs. Please refer carefully to the photographs for full condition details.
Shipping worldwide by EMS, usually 7-14 days to deliver.
