Ancient Egyptian Naqada II Flint Knife
Circa 3500–3200 B.C.
A finely worked Predynastic Egyptian flint knife dating to the Naqada II period, expertly knapped from a single piece of high-quality brown flint.
The blade exhibits a classic elongated, leaf-shaped form with gently tapering ends and carefully retouched edges. Both faces display skilled bifacial flaking, with visible ripple marks and flake scars indicative of controlled pressure flaking techniques. The edges remain sharp, suggesting its original function as a cutting implement, likely used in food preparation, craft activities, or possibly ritual contexts.
The surface shows a consistent, smooth patina with minor natural deposits and light edge wear, all consistent with considerable antiquity. The symmetry and workmanship reflect the advanced lithic technology achieved in Predynastic Egypt prior to the unification of the Nile Valley.
Length 10.6 cm.
Provenance: found in Egypt in 1930s.
Ex Swedish Egyptologist collection, 1990s.
Later in European collections.
