These eight damask linen napkins are exceptionally rare. In more than ten years of handling an extraordinary quantity of French antique linen, I have never encountered a design quite like this one. The embroidered initials immediately evoke musical notation, almost as though inspired by Roman numerals interpreted as notes upon a score. Yet the fascination does not end there. As far as I can determine, the monograms are entirely hand embroidered. Although one might expect slight variations from piece to piece, the workmanship is astonishingly consistent throughout — evidence of a remarkably skilled and experienced embroiderer who carefully orchestrated this magnificent and highly unusual design. The initials “N.M.” rest within a rectangular frame, surrounded by delicately scattered single flowers. At each of the four sides are abundant bouquets appearing to combine parrot tulips with marguerite daisies and anemones. The napkins are further enhanced by a stylised decorative border. Their provenance traces once again to the château near where I live. Unfortunately, despite extensive research, we have been unable to identify the initials, as they are not recorded in the château’s inventory ledger, where every item purchased or created within the couturière atelier would normally have been documented. These napkins are genuine treasures — exquisite survivals of French textile artistry, deserving to be cherished once again. Vintage linen have already known a first life and can therefore have slight traces of the past. We select the items in the best possible way, with love and dedication. Honest descriptions and images gives a real vision of the items. The linen that we offer for sale is not new linen, unless specifically mentioned, it is second-hand and old linen. As such it may have already been washed, used or even worn. In spite of the great care we take during the preparation, small imperfections can and may escape us. They do not in any way call into question the unique and rare character of these wonderful pieces.
