Chinese Green-Glazed Pottery Court Official – Ming Dynasty (14th–17th Century AD)
A finely modeled green-glazed pottery figure of a Chinese court official dating to the Ming Dynasty (14th–17th Century AD). Standing on a rectangular pedestal, the official is depicted wearing a long cream-colored robe covered by a vibrant emerald-green overcoat and a tall ceremonial hat accented with traces of its original red pigment. His hands are held together before the chest in a formal gesture, originally intended to support a now-lost ceremonial object, reflecting the respectful posture expected of imperial attendants. The figure displays the characteristic combination of glossy green lead glaze and unglazed buff earthenware associated with high-quality Ming funerary ceramics. Such figures were created as mingqi (“spirit objects”) and placed within elite tombs to serve and accompany the deceased in the afterlife, symbolizing status, protection, and the enduring order of the imperial court. The sculpture retains excellent sculptural detail together with an attractive archaeological surface and authentic glaze wear acquired over centuries of burial.
