Foldeskærm med krysantemumhave - morbærpapir, Bladguld, Træ, Lak, Silke - Rinpa School-style - Japan - Anden halvdel af 1800-tallet (tidlige Meiji-periode)

A beautiful mid-sized six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined Rinpa School-style painting depicting a lush chrysanthemum garden 菊 (kiku). Set within a gently rolling landscape divided by a meandering stream, vibrant clusters of chrysanthemums bloom in rich shades of pink, orange, red, white, and yellow. Some flowers grow in carefully cultivated groups enclosed by a bamboo fence, while others appear more freely scattered across the landscape. Several flower heads are meticulously heightened in low relief with gofun 胡粉 (crushed shell paste), adding subtle depth and texture to the composition. Dense gold-leaf clouds drift across the scene, partially obscuring distant mountain peaks emerging through the mist. Executed in natural pigments and ink on mulberry paper with gold leaf. The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims, a slender ecru inner border and a broad navy-blue outer border. Set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with ornate gilt-metal protective corner mounts. Period: Japan – Second half 19th century (Early Meiji period) Dimensions: Total width 277.4 cm (2 × 47.7 cm, 4 × 45.5 cm); Height 140 cm Considering its age, the screen is in very good condition with some discoloration and restorations mainly along the edges, as well as traces of wear consistent with age on both sides. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is well suited for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can also be displayed as a standalone piece. When shipped, a certificate of authenticity will be included.
