6 damaskservietter fra det tidlige 20. århundrede med initialerne M.P. - Serviet - 65 cm - 80 cm
This is an almost complete set of napkins, whispering that it was treasured more than truly used. One can easily imagine it being carefully stored away for special occasions that perhaps never quite arrived.
I have chosen to divide the collection into two sets: one of six napkins and another of four. Families today are smaller than they were in the early years of the twentieth century, when it was still common for twelve relatives to gather around the Sunday table, sharing long lunches that stretched gently into the afternoon.
The initials “M.P.” are beautifully embroidered with a confidence that feels almost personal, as though the embroiderer wished to leave behind more than simply a monogram. The letters are richly and solidly stitched, yet softened by delicate playful embroidery layered above them, giving the initials an almost three-dimensional presence. There is both strength and lightness in the work — a lovely balance that brings the linen to life.
The napki is particularly generous in its dimensian at 85cm wide.
The damask carries the timeless checkerboard weave so characteristic of the period, for little else was commonly available to most households in the early twentieth century. Of course, the grand woven damasks of Lyon already existed — those magnificent hunting scenes and elaborate patterns admired today — but such luxuries belonged to another world, far beyond the means of the average French family.
And perhaps that is part of the charm here: these napkins were not made for palaces, but for a family table, for candlelight, conversation, and the quiet rituals of Sunday gatherings now long past.
