Antikkens Rom, Imperie Bronze Figur - 3.2 cm (Ingen mindstepris)
Roman Bronze Applique with Theatrical or Mythological Mask, Roman Empire, 1st to 3rd Century AD
Finely cast bronze applique depicting a human face rendered in high relief, characterized by large almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, full lips, and abundant stylized curls framing the head. The figure wears an elaborate headdress or coiffure surmounted by a small suspension or attachment element, indicating its original use as a decorative fitting attached to furniture, a casket, a harness, or another luxury object. Appliques featuring theatrical, divine, or mythological faces were popular decorative motifs throughout the Roman Empire, combining artistic refinement with symbolic and protective functions.
The piece displays an attractive ancient green patina with areas of encrustation and surface wear consistent with considerable age. Despite its small size, the modelling remains expressive, preserving many of the original facial details and decorative elements. Such bronze fittings represent the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Roman metalworkers and offer a tangible connection to the decorative arts of the Imperial period.
