Knogle - Japan - Meiji-perioden (1868-1912)

Rare Miniature Carved Bone Ojime — Tanuki (Raccoon Dog), Bakumatsu–Meiji Era, Japan A rare and charming miniature Japanese ojime (cord bead) carved from bone, depicting a tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) — one of the most beloved figures in Japanese folklore, symbolising good luck and prosperity. Despite its tiny scale (H 1.4 cm), the carving is remarkably detailed: the tanuki's characteristic round belly, open mouth, alert ears, and fur texture are all clearly rendered through confident line engraving. The cord channel (himotoshi) runs cleanly through the piece and remains fully functional. Ojime of this quality and subject matter are increasingly difficult to find. This example dates to the Bakumatsu–Meiji period (mid-19th to early 20th century) and shows appropriate age-related patina throughout. Carved from natural bone — no CITES restrictions apply. Condition: Good overall. Natural patina consistent with age. No chips or cracks. All condition details are shown in the photographs. Provenance: Private collection, Kyoto, Japan. Sold by Japan Rare Archive — specialist in authentic Japanese antiques sourced directly in Japan.
