The Oyster Royal blev introduceret i 1933 og var genkendelig som en af de tidligste armbandsur til at have en centralt drejet sekundviser, i modsætning til den lille sekundregister som var normen. Rolex markedsførte Royal som værende ideelt egnet til dem i det medicinske erhverv, begrundet i at en stor sekundviser ville være meget lettere at aflæse, når man timing et patientens hjerteslag. Underligt nok, efterhånden som centrum-sekunder blev mere almindelige, blev Oyster Royal tilbudt i både centrum- og undersekund-format, og Oyster Royal-modellen blev mere forbundet med de britiske militære tjenester.
