【Product details】
This is an exceptionally high-quality full-scale, full-colour reproduction of the famous “Choju Giga Scrolls” (Frolicking Animals), a National Treasure preserved at Kozan-ji Temple in Kyoto. Often referred to as “Japan’s oldest manga,” these scrolls depict rabbits, frogs, monkeys, and other animals playfully engaged in human-like activities such as bathing, wrestling, and archery. The lively brushwork and humorous narrative convey a remarkable sense of movement and character, making the work one of the most celebrated examples of early Japanese pictorial art.
This set was published in 1968 (Showa 43) by Kodansha as a luxurious limited edition. At the time, it carried a very high retail price of 158,000 yen, reflecting its status as a top-tier art reproduction. The production was entrusted to Otsuka Kogeisha, widely regarded as one of the finest studios specialising in high-end art printing. Great care has been taken to faithfully reproduce the texture of the paper, the subtle tonal variations, and even the red seals, capturing the spirit and appearance of the original work with impressive accuracy.
The set consists of two handscrolls and includes a Japanese-language explanatory booklet. The scrolls are mounted in traditional format on paper, with roller ends made of either rock crystal or glass; due to the quality, they are most likely rock crystal, although this cannot be confirmed with certainty.
The set is presented in a beautiful black lacquer inner case with gold maki-e inscription, housed within a paulownia wood storage box, and further accompanied by the original outer cardboard shipping box from the period.
The scrolls themselves are in very good condition, with no noticeable damage to the paper, painting, or mounting fabric, and remain well preserved overall. The accompanying booklet shows minor foxing. The paulownia wood box and lacquer case are in very good vintage condition with minimal wear. The outermost cardboard box shows significant age-related wear, including scuffing, staining, and deterioration, but it has effectively protected the contents inside. Please refer to the photos for details.
Dimensions:
Total Length of Scroll: approx. 11.3 meters (37 feet)
Scroll Width: approx. 32 cm
Diameter (when rolled): approx. 6 cm
