A nice Satsuma’ware figure depicting the deity Hotei 布袋.
Hotei is revered as the god of contentment and happiness, guardian of children, patron of bartenders, and one of Japan’s beloved Seven Lucky Gods 七福神 (Shichifukujin).
He is shown standing with a joyfully expression, holding a long walking cane over his shoulder from which hangs his signature cloth bag 布袋 (nunobukuro), a magical sack that never empties.
Crackled Satsuma ceramic base with red, green and black enamal glaze details heightened with gilding.
Underside with two marks, a sakura blossom and 2-character name seal: ‘Ichirai’ 市來.
Dimensions:
Heigth 19.8 cm, Width 18 cm, Depth 10 cm.
Period: Japan – around 1900 (Meiji period)
