Michael Joseph
"Pool Ladies / Playboy Contact Sheet – Clapham, 1987"
Original Contact Sheet Test Print – Signed & Annotated by the Photographer
Offered here is a rare original contact-sheet style laser print from Michael Joseph’s celebrated Pool Ladies series, created in Clapham, London during the late 1980s and retained in the photographer’s personal archive.
Rather than presenting a single selected image, this fascinating piece reveals the creative process itself. Sixteen sequential frames show Joseph directing his swimmers through a series of carefully choreographed poses, each frame differing subtly from the last. The resulting grid becomes almost cinematic: a study of rhythm, movement, balance and repetition, where individual photographs combine to create a larger visual composition.
What makes this piece particularly appealing is its insight into Joseph's working method. Renowned for constructing complex group scenes long before digital manipulation existed, he relied on patience, observation and precise timing. Here we witness those qualities in action as the models shift between elegance, humour and theatricality, their repeated forms creating a striking graphic pattern across the sheet.
The print bears Michael Joseph's handwritten annotations, including the title “Pool Ladies”, the location “Clapham”, and the date 1987, together with his signature. The reverse retains a period studio archive label, further reinforcing its provenance.
More than simply a photograph, this is a working document from the photographer's archive—a rare glimpse behind the scenes at the development of one of his most recognisable series.
