En træskulptur - Baule - Elfenbenskysten (Ingen mindstepris)

The Baule maternity figure from the Daoukro region, shown here, represents one of the most important sculptural traditions in West Africa. The Baule, whose cultural roots lie in the Akan cultural sphere, developed a sculptural art that focuses less on individual portraiture and more on depicting idealized beauty, moral integrity, and spiritual harmony. Representations of motherhood occupy a special place within this tradition, embodying fertility, continuity of lineage, and social stability. The seated female figure is distinguished by an exceptionally finely crafted updo with a side braid, a feature frequently seen in Baule art as an expression of status, refinement, and physical perfection. Particularly striking is the dotted ornamentation on the abdomen and neck, reminiscent of scarification patterns, which can be interpreted as a symbol of beauty, identity, and cultural belonging. The slightly downward gaze and downturned corners of the mouth lend the figure a solemn, contemplative dignity. She holds a child in her lap, which becomes the central iconographic focus of the composition. Her forward-facing, pointed breasts emphasize the nurturing function of the mother and simultaneously allude to fertility and feminine vitality. The ornamented stool, as well as the arm and ankle bracelets, underscore her social standing. Patina, fine cracks, and signs of wear testify to age and ritual appreciation, lending the sculpture a compelling historical presence. Literature (selection) Baule: African Art, Western Eyes, Susan M. Vogel, New Haven 1997. The Art of the Ivory Coast, Zurich 1984. African Art in Cultural Perspective, Bloomington 2008. Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa, Washington D.C. 1989. African Art, Paris 1988. MAZ13701
