False Start – Pool Ladies for Playboy, London, 1987
Unique Cyanotype by Justine Joseph, from a photograph by Michael Joseph
Photograph originally taken in Clapham, London, 1987
Drawn from Michael Joseph's celebrated Pool Ladies series, this unique cyanotype reimagines one of its most dynamic images. The original photograph was taken during the now-famous 1987 Clapham swimming-pool shoot, organised as a self-promotional session when Playboy came to interview Michael about his work. It perfectly captures the theatrical wit, visual vitality and meticulous choreography that became his hallmark.
Six swimmers stand poised on the pool's edge while a lone diver breaks formation, slicing into shimmering water. Built on rhythm, repetition and release, the composition balances symmetry with spontaneity, stillness with speed, creating an image that is both playful and profoundly graphic.
Hand-printed by Michael's daughter, Justine Joseph, using the traditional nineteenth-century cyanotype process, the photograph is immersed in rich Prussian blues that lend the scene an almost dreamlike atmosphere. The velvety tonal depth and luminous colour are even more striking in person than photographs can convey. Each print is uniquely shaped by sunlight, making this a genuine one-off.
The reverse tells its own story. Rather than using new paper, Justine printed onto the reverse of an original Christie's exhibition poster featuring one of Michael Joseph's photographs from the 1980s. This quiet act of upcycling reflects a family philosophy of "waste not, want not" inherited from Michael, whose wartime upbringing fostered a lifelong respect for materials and resourcefulness. Hidden from view, the poster adds another authentic layer to the work's provenance and history.
Please note that the slight undulations visible in the paper are entirely characteristic of the handmade cyanotype process. Repeated sensitising, washing and rinsing naturally prevent the paper from remaining perfectly flat and should be regarded as an inherent feature rather than a defect.
More than a photograph, this is a unique artist's object—handmade in the Dordogne sunshine nearly forty years after the original negative was exposed—bringing together two generations of photographic practice in a single, unrepeatable work.
Mount size: 30 × 24 cm
