It was round with a square hole drilled in the center. The obverse was inscribed with the characters "Bunkyu Eiho" in a top-bottom-right-left order, while the reverse featured a wave pattern similar to the eleven waves of the Kinei-do Hōdō. Besides local coins, it was the last type of coin issued in Japan. The cursive script containing the character "treasure" was written by young men and Ogasawara Nagayuki, known as "Shinbun"; the cursive script "treasure" was written by older men and Itakura Katsutsu, known as "Jimon"; and the cursive script with "treasure" as "treasure treasury" was the calligraphy of the Chief Minister Matsudaira Yoshinaga, known as "Ryūhō" or "Tamaho".
