The color comes from iron in the crystal structure, so peridot is always some shade of green — no heat treatment to change it. Larger stones tend to be a deeper olive. - *Chemical formula*: $(Mg, Fe)_2SiO_4$ — magnesium iron silicate - *Hardness*: 6.5 to 7 on Mohs scale. So it’s durable for earrings, pendants, and rings, but can scratch if it rubs against harder gems like quartz or sapphire. - *Luster*: Vitreous, glassy.
