In the eighth year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign (1743), the Mongol tribes presented ten famous horses to the Qing court. The Qianlong Emperor specially commissioned Giuseppe Castiglione to paint "Ten Horses" to commemorate the military achievements. Each painting recorded the origin and physical characteristics of the horses.
Lang Shining郎世宁(Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688-1766), formerly known as Giuseppe Castiglione, holy name Joseph, Catholic Jesuit monk, painter, native of Milan, Italy. He came to China to preach in 1715 (the fifty-fourth year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty), and then entered the imperial palace as a court painter. After Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong dynasties, he was engaged in painting in China for more than 50 years, and participated in the design of the Western Building in Yuanmingyuan. One of the top ten painters, his work "Hundred Steeds"(百骏图) is recognized as one of the top ten famous historical paintings in China.
