Medieval, Crusaders Bronze Pair Finger Rings Culture / Period: Medieval, Crusaders Date / Period: 11th–14th century Material: Bronze Dimensions: Outside diameter: 16–21 mm Condition: Good condition No shipping outside the European Union. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 715 The current owner purchased the Medieval, Crusaders bronze pair finger rings from a private collector, N.N. The previous owner, a private collector, N.N. from the Netherlands, stated that the objects had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the objects had previously been in a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the objects was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This pair of bronze finger rings dates to the medieval Crusader period and represents practical examples of personal jewellery worn between the 11th and 14th centuries. Both rings feature simple integral bezels, one plain oval and the other decorated with a pair of incised vertical lines. Such understated geometric decoration is characteristic of many medieval rings intended for everyday wear. Bronze finger rings of this type were commonly worn by both men and women throughout the Crusader States and the wider medieval Mediterranean. Besides serving as personal ornaments, simple rings could also express social identity, personal taste, or modest status. Unlike elaborate gold or silver examples owned by the elite, bronze rings were affordable and widely accessible. These rings were cast in bronze and finished by hand, with the bezel surfaces carefully shaped before the engraved decoration was added. Their manufacture reflects the established metalworking traditions of medieval workshops, where craftsmen produced functional jewellery for local communities as well as for the diverse populations brought together through pilgrimage, commerce, and the Crusades. Similar examples have been recovered from archaeological sites across the Levant and throughout medieval Europe. Dating to the 11th–14th century, these rings illustrate the everyday material culture of the Crusader period. They form tangible connections to the medieval world, in which such personal ornaments accompanied their owners in daily life across regions linked by trade, pilgrimage, and cultural exchange.
