Large Celadon-Glazed Deer-Handled Vase with Extensive Relief Decoration – East Asia – Private Collection Formed in Japan An impressive large-scale celadon-glazed vase featuring sculptural deer-head handles and extensive hand-modelled relief decoration across the entire body. This piece originates from the estate of a Norwegian priest and his wife, who lived in Japan for many years and assembled a substantial collection of Asian art, ceramics and cultural objects over several decades. The vase stands out through its exceptional size, substantial weight and highly detailed decorative program. The entire surface is covered with a finely crackled celadon glaze and adorned with relief motifs depicting deer, pine trees, mountains, clouds and landscape elements associated with traditional East Asian symbolism. Particularly striking are the sculptural deer-head handles, which are fully integrated into the vessel and display a level of modelling rarely encountered in ordinary decorative production. The vessel is heavily constructed, with thick walls of approximately 10 mm and a weight of approximately 6.9 kg, indicating a labor-intensive manufacturing process. The crackle pattern is present throughout the glaze and appears consistent with the original firing and finish rather than later damage. No visible factory marks, modern manufacturer stamps or export marks have been found. The vase is offered as an Asian collector’s ceramic. Precise attribution, dating and origin are left to the judgement of prospective bidders.
