Medieval Islamic Bronze Zoomorphic Apliqué with Feline Head – Seljuk Tradition – 11th to 13th Century AD A substantial cast-bronze zoomorphic apliqué attributed to the medieval Islamic world, most plausibly within the Seljuk artistic tradition. The circular hoop develops into a sculptural feline or leonine head with prominent pointed ears, almond-shaped eyes and an elongated muzzle, shown leaning toward a large faceted terminal or bezel. The polyhedral element is divided into angular panels, some retaining worn incised motifs. Its powerful modelling, animal-headed construction and geometric terminal reflect the strong zoomorphic vocabulary employed in Seljuk metalwork, where lions and other predatory animals carried associations with strength, protection and authority.
