Zōroku-zō (藏六造) - Lampe - støbejern - Openwork Iron Yukimi Dōrō

Title: Pavilion-shaped Openwork Cast Iron Yukimi Dōrō (雪見灯籠) Maker: Zōroku-zō (藏六造) Technique: One-piece sand-cast iron casting Mark: Cast inscription on the base Dimensions: H 23.5 × W 15 × D 15 cm (9.25 × 5.91 × 5.91 in) Weight: 2700 g Material: Cast iron (sand-cast pig iron, Kyoto lineage casting craft) Structure: Separable assembly, lantern body detaches from base Period: Mid-Shōwa era (c.1950–1980) This rustic pavilion-style Yukimi Dōrō (雪見灯籠) is a traditional Japanese sand-cast iron piece, suitable for display in gardens, residential interiors and tea spaces. Derived from classic Japanese stone garden lanterns, Yukimi Dōrō are iconic Japanese decorative furnishings. Modelled as a four-sided pavilion with upturned eaves and tiered pagoda finial, recreating the silhouette of traditional Japanese stone lantern architecture. The main body features openwork quatrefoil lattice panels on all sides, complemented by scrolling relief moulding beneath the perforations. The openwork construction casts gentle, elegant light patterns when a candle is placed inside. The arched four-legged base provides stable support. The lantern body and base form a separable unit; the upper section can be lifted away for easy candle replacement and interior cleaning. The cast iron retains its original matte dark brown patina with coarse, substantial metallic texture. Produced by traditional single-piece sand casting without welded joints. Crisp openwork carving balances the solid, heavy character of cast iron with refined pierced craftsmanship, embodying the subtle wabi-sabi aesthetic of Japanese craft. The lantern bears the cast mark “Zōroku-zō” (藏六造). Hata Zōroku represents a distinguished multi-generational Kyoto metalworking lineage, one of Japan’s most renowned casting schools. Consistent with its age, the iron has developed evenly aged patina alongside minor wear from display. There are no damages or repairs. All original separable components remain intact. Overall condition is good.
