En træskulptur - Baule - Elfenbenskysten (Ingen mindstepris)

This male Baule statue from the Bouaké region in central Côte d'Ivoire embodies the classic stylistic language of Baule sculpture; such figures were created not as portraits of specific individuals, but as idealized manifestations of spiritual perfection. Comparable figures served as ancestral images, protective cult figures, or *blolo bian* (spirit spouses) intended to maintain a connection between the human community and the invisible spirit world. The Bouaké region is one of the most significant centers of Baule art, renowned for workshops producing works characterized by balanced proportions and exceptionally refined surface detailing. Standing on a flat base, the figure displays a calm, balanced posture. The hands, resting at the sides of the lower abdomen, form the compositional focal point and lend the figure a sense of self-contained stability. The elaborately styled coiffure features a central crest - resembling a Mohawk - that transitions into a small braid at the nape of the neck and is framed by braided strands on the sides. A finely crafted headband separates the hairstyle from the face, terminating harmoniously behind the ears. Beneath strong, pronounced brows, the figure directs an alert gaze straight ahead. The closed mouth and semicircular beard impart a dignified serenity to the face. Stud-like relief ornaments at the corners of the mouth, on the neck, abdomen, and back evoke traditional scarification patterns, signifying social identity, beauty, and spiritual power. The slightly flexed knees introduce a subtle sense of dynamism, while the clearly defined male genitalia underscore the figure's iconographic completeness. A deep, lustrous patina and fine traces of wear bear witness to a long history of ritual use, lending the sculpture its historical authenticity.
