A fine Byzantine commercial bronze weight. The weight is circular in shape with a thick rim with two incised lines. The obverse is decorated with an engraving of a cross patté with Greek letters Го and В underneath. The design is enclosed within a hatched wreath. Patination and earthy encrustations to the surface, and signs of wear as consistent with age. Sets of standard balance weights were used to precisely weigh goods in the Byzantine world. Weights produced during the Byzantine Era were made of gold, silver, bronze, lead, glass, and stone and were generally shaped as squares, discs or flattened spheres.
