Longines - Open-face 17-jewel hunter-scene sub-seconds - 4004 - 1900-1949
Introduction
This is a Longines open-face pocket watch with a white enamel-style dial carrying bold blue Arabic numerals, blued-steel sword hands, and a subsidiary seconds register at the 6 o'clock position. The movement is a manual-winding calibre 540, signed 'Longines Swiss 17 Jewels' on the nickel-finish mainplate, serial 51120478. The outer case is a snap-back type with an ornately repoussé-worked band and a beautifully relief-chased caseback depicting a hunter with two dogs in a woodland scene.
Historical / Era context
Longines of Saint-Imier, Switzerland, has produced precision pocket watch movements since 1867, and the calibre 540 family represents the marque's classic thin manual-winding platform favoured for dress and presentation pocket watches. The hunter-scene caseback is a hallmark of prestige gift and sporting watches produced by Longines during the mid-twentieth century. The case is stamped 'Fab. Suisse Metal 4004', identifying it as a Swiss-made base-metal case supplied to the movement.
Condition
The watch is running and keeping good time. The watch was checked lying flat (dial up) after a full wind. This is a spot check at the time of listing; as a vintage mechanical watch the rate in actual wear varies with position and winding state, and long-term accuracy is not guaranteed. As a vintage timepiece it may benefit from a service.
Case: The gold-toned case shows moderate wear consistent with age: the bezel rim and band carry scattered fine scratches and some areas of plating loss, most evident on the raised portions of the repoussé band decoration and around the bow. The hunter-scene caseback relief retains good definition overall. The bow and crown retain their original form.
Dial: The white dial is in good condition with strong, fully legible blue Arabic numerals and clear sub-seconds track. There are a few fine hairline cracks across the dial surface, visible under close inspection — a characteristic of age on enamel or lacquered dials of this type.
Crystal: The acrylic crystal has several fine scratches across its surface and at least one more prominent scratch visible near the centre. It remains transparent and the dial is fully readable.
Movement: The watch is running. With the caseback opened, the movement is revealed as the Longines calibre 540, a 17-jewel manual-winding movement with a nickel-finish three-quarter plate, gold-coloured gear train, and blued screws. The movement is clean and presents well.
Accessories: No box, papers, or chain are included. The watch is offered as shown.
