Tidlig middelalder. Merovingisk. Bronze Spændetunge - 36 mm (Ingen mindstepris)

"Early Medieval Merovingian Bronze Buckle Tongue Culture / Period: Early Medieval, Merovingian Date / Period: 6th century A.D. Material: Bronze Dimensions: 36 mm Condition: Good condition No shipping outside the European Union. Due to complex export regulations concerning cultural goods, this item cannot be shipped outside the EU. Please ensure you have a delivery address within the European Union before placing a bid. Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 753 The current owner purchased this object from a reputable Dutch numismatic auction house in Schiedam, the Netherlands. Due to privacy regulations, the name of the previous owner could not be disclosed. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This bronze buckle tongue is a finely crafted component from a Merovingian belt buckle dating to the 6th century A.D. The tongue features a ribbed attachment collar and a curved terminal ending in a rounded point, a form characteristic of high-quality belt fittings produced during the Merovingian period. Although separated from its original buckle frame, it remains an informative example of early medieval dress equipment. Belts were among the most important items of personal attire in Merovingian society. Beyond their practical function of securing clothing, they served as visible indicators of status, identity, and craftsmanship. Both men and women wore decorated belts fitted with bronze or iron buckles, strap ends, and mounts, while more elaborate examples accompanied individuals in richly furnished burials throughout the Frankish kingdoms. Merovingian metalworkers were renowned for their sophisticated craftsmanship, producing belt fittings using casting, forging, engraving, and, in wealthier examples, inlay techniques. The ribbed decoration on this buckle tongue reflects the restrained but elegant ornamentation typical of the period. Similar buckle tongues have been recovered from settlements and cemeteries across present-day France, Belgium, the Netherlands, western Germany, and neighbouring regions, illustrating the widespread cultural influence of the Merovingian world."
